i would like to explore your reason for posting this... since, this seems to be a common subject i hear girls bring up from time to time... basically i feel i need to know the appropriate response. what does a boy do when a girl brings this up?

haha, let me know if you find someone, lauren!

J, good question. My reason for posting it is because I found it very funny because of the irony, as I've experienced this myself and so have a lot of women I know. It happens a lot, people telling you you look tired or ask you if something is wrong when not wearing makeup.

I guess the sociological side of me appreciated its commentary on the standards society hold for female beauty. It's a lose-lose if she aims to please mainstream society's expectations because they say they critique a woman for wearing too much makeup yet when she doesn't make herself up they think something is wrong or she looks sick or tired, thus showing that there are unrealistic expectations of what a woman should look like in her natural form, even though they don't realize they have those expectations and think women should be "natural."

I guess the appropriate response would be a lively discussion of your thoughts! What do you think?

i think i should avoid said 'lively discussion' based on a few factors...
usually this topic gets brought up by a woman who probably just got a you look tired comment. most likely this comment came from a man, or even more likely me. HAHA
there is a tension here. that's why its hard to talk about. im mean, i know when i dont shave or make my hair look nice i am tired. so, would it be fare to say that when a woman doesnt wear make up she could be feeling down a little?
you are right though. it does seem there are higher standards of beauty on women.
i dont know where to go from here...

i actually laughed at how that's true. and i laughed out loud in front of my fiance :)

and then i began to read the discussion. you've struck an interesting sociological issue here kait.

I think the natural look comes from a little powder (not foundation), a little mascara and maybe some neutral colored eye shadow. Just a thought. As far as the topic...I think the tired comments come when a woman that usually wears makeup chooses not to. If she usually doesn't wear make up and chooses to, that's when people freak out that she looks so great. I think the bottom line is that our society, weather they admit it or not, likes a woman to at least wear some make up, that amount varies with personal taste.
Overall, hilarious and an interesting discussion...how interesting one little picture can generate so much thought. Thanks for posting Kaitie.

Thanks Stephianica!

Good points, Jeremy and Jessica.

"I think the bottom line is that our society, weather they admit it or not, likes a woman to at least wear some make up, that amount varies with personal taste. " Yeah, don't think there much more to add.
